What are Keywords and Why Should You Use Them

If you want to optimize your website so that you can be found online, you will need to use the right keywords. Keywords are the terms that people use to search online for a product or service, or for additional information.

You don’t need to be an expert in keywords or SEO. But you’ll need to learn the basics if you want to make sure that  your target audience finds your website. They will not be searching for your name but they are likely to search for products and services that you offer. And you want to be among the search results that Google or other search engines will generate.

So, what are keywords?

As mentioned above, keywords are words that people use to search for information online. They are words and phrases that your target audience uses to find your website. These are words and phrases that you can use to reel your target audience into your website.

Keywords can be a single word or multiple words that best describe your business, products or services. You can use the category of your product or service as your keyword. However if you’re selling gym equipment, it will be a little difficult to target potential customers as there are lots of other businesses posting about gym equipment.

To connect with the right audience, you want to use the right keywords. Search engines use keywords to determine what your content is. They use your keywords to connect you and your content with your intended audience.

Tips for using keywords

If you’re ready to start using keywords, check out these helpful tips.

Use the right amount of keywords.
What you need to understand with keywords is that you need to use just the right amount of keywords in any of your web pages or blog posts. A couple keywords will make it difficult for search engines to determine what your web page or blog post is about. Overusing keywords will make your website look spammy. According to experts, the right amount of keywords is about 1%-2% of all the words in your copy.

Your keywords need to make sense.
Your keywords must flow naturally in your blog post or web content. They need to be spread out evenly throughout the copy. Remember that people find your website through your keywords. They come to your website looking for information and if they don’t find what they are looking for, they will leave and forget about your website. Give them valuable information so that they will keep coming back to your website.

Put yourself in the shoes of your target audience when thinking about which keywords to use
Because you’re using keywords to reel in your target audience, you need to put yourself in the shoes of your target audience. Think like your target audience and find out what phrases they usually search about. Make a list of these search terms and compare it with phrases that describe your content. This will help you determine keywords that describe your business and that people are looking for and it will be easier for you to use them naturally throughout your webpage or blog post.

Track your keywords
Whether your goal is to rank higher in search engine page results or increase your website visits, you will need to spend time tracking your keywords. This will help you determine which keywords work and which keywords you need to replace. And you want to keep changing your keywords so that you can attract more visitors to your website. Some of the tools you can use to track your keywords are SEMrush, Ahrefs, Moz Pro, and Serpfox.

As a business owner, learning about keywords can help you increase your website traffic. You don’t have to be an SEO or keyword expert but learning about the basics is enough to establish your presence online.
